Hark the Hoppy Lagers Sing (HHLS) is a cloudy, milky looking sort of a thing. If I didn't know better, I'd swear I was drinking a witbier or some kind of American wheat beer. The head is packed, bone white, and has decent retention.
It's definitely a hop forward lager, giving me the sort of ripe, juicy hop profile I'd expect from an American IPA. Bready, doughy malts give a base supporting what smells like ripe seville oranges. Hints of earth provide an interesting, not unpleasant through note. The finish is short and clipped.
Flavor wise there is nothing lagery going on here. Flavors are dominantly juicy, giving me up front flavors of orange juice. Fresh risen bread dough comes in here, lending support. Hints of earth and black pepper provide the barest hints of backbone. The finish is peppery, bitter, and slightly more lasting than the aroma.
It just fails for me on so many levels. First of all, it's not a lager. By the label's own admission it's not a lager, and yet it advertises itself as such. Second, the flavors don't combine in a way that makes me want or need to drink this beer. I'm going to have to give it a hard pass and recommend you do the same.
