16oz can

Pours over a finger of white head into my willi becher glass. Fades down to a sturdy film after a few minutes, average retention. Body is a mostly clear, light golden yellow. Somewhat high amount of bubbles coming up. Overall it looks pretty good so far.

Nose is very nice up front with clove and banana esters. Maybe a touch of hops, but not much in that category. Slightly sweet. Overall pretty simple, clean. It smells nice, nothing more.

Flavor is much the same. Not really getting the “hoppy” part of this saison, which isn’t the end of the world, but I was looking forward to it. Some banana, some clove. Maybe just a touch sweet, but overall easy drinking and attenuation is relatively high. Esters are done well, and the dry-sweet ratio is very nice, other than that it’s a pretty straight forward saison.

Mouthfeel does some work here. The sweetness is as much mouth as it is flavor, and being one of the more impressive flavor aspects, it’s holds true here – not very sweet, but just enough to add some character. Carbonation is medium. Body is noticeably thicker than it could be, I don’t mind it. Not really any bitterness to speak of, fine for the style, not for the advertised product. Overall a pretty nice mouthfeel.

Drinkability is high, it’s tasty and unoffensive.

The appearance turned out decent. This isn’t the cleanest glass (fair amount of dust), and I still got some acceptable lacing.

Overall a nice saison. Pretty safe, not hitting anything out of the ballpark, but very serviceable, tasty, and nothing wrong with it.

2019 Chinook dry hopped version from The Beermongers.

A clear light orange with a dense, white head that falls off rapidly, this looks solid. The nose is surprisingly mild and muted, with grain, a little straw, a little pepper, clove and grains of paradise. An unexpected citrus hop character is present, that doesn't really add or complement the existing notes. I do have to point out that the grainy depth of the base beer is solid, with a rustic, bready character. The palate opens clean and crisp, with pepper, honey, straw and a little clove. A grainy, mildly straw like bread character is present. Truth be told, this is more Belgian Pale Ale like, reminding me more of a Duvel-like beer. Mild citrus notes are present. Drying, crisp and clean on the finish with a fair bit of hop snap and a little pepper, this beer is easy to drink and quite refreshing. Carbonation is a little lower than ideal, but not by much.
