The beer arrives looking a hazy autumn gold, with a thick, creamy, casky head. Slightly off white, the head sticks to the glass with great lacing.
Aroma is richly malty and sweet, with a slight toasted malt profile. A hint of pear and floral qualities, with subtle hops. Not a whole lot of aroma hopping, probably some saaz and spalter.
Flavor is robust and powerful. Heavy malt, with a bit of toasted flavor, and a huge appley esteriness, almost cidery. Slightly phenolic. A touch of caramel and honey. Extremely smooth, velvety on the tongue, with little carbonation. A distinct cold conditioned taste, despite the phenols. Hops are slightly herbal, and come through mostly in the finish, providing a light tang. The finish is very quick, and a bit dry, with an impressive sticky malt aftertaste.
It's definitely not the cleanest lager I've ever had, but it's quite an amazing beer.
