On-tap at Willimantic Brewing Company
Pours a clear, deep orange-gold with virtually no head; minimal lacing left behind save for a thin off-white collar of foam.
Aroma begins with tones of caramel malt and brown sugar, with bits of spruce/evergreen, oaky tones, and hints of maple working their way in lightly; rounded, light, and does a decent job of integrating earthy and sweet tones.
Taste is a really subtle, nice intermingling of spruce and maple, with lightly bitter/toasty notes of dark bread and caramel malts; a bit herbal on the finish along with some really roasty oak, coming to a head with an almost earthy sweetness.
Mouthfeel shows light, relaxed carbonation against a medium, slightly buttery body; a slight grit brings it all together while guiding through a clean, roasty, slightly oily finish.
A very approachable and mild first entry into the style for me; nothing overwhelmed, but there was enough in the way of texture and flavor to keep things interesting. Not terribly special overall, but drinkable all the same.
