Pours caramel brown, mostly opaque, with a four finger head. Aroma is maple and vanilla. Taste is very maple, cinnamon, vanilla and spices, nutmeg being the most prominent. The brew is very sweet but not sticky sweet, which i like, and thin in texture. The combination of spices is what kicks this up a notch and makes this beer worth tasting.

I picked a six pack up from the Weathered Souls brew pub the other day. WS has gotten a lot of publicity in recent years, and I'm always in favor of supporting the local breweries, but I did think $20 for a 4-pack was a bit steep. That said, it's all going back into the local economy, so there's some upside if you look at it from the right angle. Not sure what is meant by "Imperial Texas Style Brown Ale," but I was excited to try it.
Pours thin with no head, but the color is pretty. Dark brown and deep copper tones show up when the glass is held up to the light. Kinda looks like flat soda, or maybe a dark cognac. The nose is assertive, heavy with spices like nutmeg and allspice. Hints of nuts, dark fruit and alcohol. I like the smell, but the taste is almost too much here. It's overpowering with sweetness. Maple syrup, yes, but too much. Some vanilla extract is noticeable, but the sugary sweetness is just too strong. Mouthfeel is smooth and even.
I want to like this beer so much more than I actually do. It's not a bad effort, it's just way too sweet. And yes, I suppose a beer called "Claude's Pie Obsession" is supposed to be sweet, but I've had pies that are more well balanced that this beer. It's big and boozy, and you'd think the sugary overtones might help balance things out here more then they do. Instead, it's overly sweet and a bit offensive. I will still happily support Weathered Souls, but I won't be revisiting this beer any time soon.
