One hears good things about this brewery’s stouts. This little 12 oz. guy is my first, as some of the prices are somewhat…off-putting.

Black & not quite as still as the name suggests. Short of nose-dipping, all I’m getting off the surface is flecks of whiskey & malt.

Still Souls – the whiskey is pungent, earthy, woody, & dominant. I can feel the barrel in my toenails. That makes up most of the beer. The malts are a minor contributor, bringing the framework of light chocolate, sweetness, & much lighter than expected mouthfeel for a big brew. My sternum is warming up already.

A simple, direct barrel aged stout that highlights the barrel & dares you to make up non-existent complexities. Very good beer that’s borderline excellent.
