A dark beer first brewed by Benedictine Monks in the 12th century, and later refined by the introduction of lager yeast and kilned malts, the Munich Dunkel is generally accepted as Der König - or The King of dark lagers. Our version pours deep brown with hues of garnet red and delivers a Wagner-like symphony of flavours including chocolate, toffee, port, toasted bread and buckwheat honey with a crisp finish. Long live Der König! 20 IBU

473 mL can, Day 16 of Nita Beer's 2024 Advent Calendar; dated Sep 28 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a deep chestnut brown; holding it to the light reveals its clarity, in addition to its brilliant crimson red highlights. Just over an inch of soapy, tan-coloured head lasts for a couple of minutes, swiftly reduced to a tight collar and filmy cap; each swirl or tilt of the glass leaves behind a line of sticky lace. The aroma is sweet and malty, comprised of milk chocolate, cocoa, toffee & toast, with a little bit of a raisin-y port wine note.
A flavourful dark lager, but a little on the sweet side for my tastes. Chocolate, cocoa, caramelized sugars and toasted bread are all present and accounted for, with hints of raisin and date not far behind. Not a lot of development beyond that: some roasted grains, with toffee & toast lingering into a malty aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that brushes gently across the palate, adding some bite to this lager's smooth mouthfeel. Good drinkability: this glass disappeared pretty quickly, and I wouldn't have minded a refill.
Final Grade: 3.83, a B+. Common Good's König is a good Munich dunkel, but at the end of the day, this is not a style I reach for all that often - if I'm going to drink a dark german lager, I'd generally prefer a schwarzbier. That being said, there's no denying that this is a very flavourful, strong-ish lager that will appeal to dunkel fans, as well as those of amber lagers and other malt-forward styles. I'd buy this again if I were in the mood for a sweet lager, and I'd also encourage other German beer lovers to give it a try, too.
