This decadent Imperial Chocolate Stout was aged in Westward Whiskey barrels and blended with vanilla beans & cocoa nibs. As the label suggests, this is what we imagine the chocolate river in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory would have tasted like…if it were beer!

My first from Matchless, I went on their website and it was basic for an 8 year old. But, they are an accomplished micro. They seem tight with our friend(s) at Tavour; plus have won several Washington state awards, crowned early in life as a micro to watch. But now, they are 8 years old and that is time to expand the business horizons and share the glories of crafting with more people in more places and with more gusto.

As for 2024, it continues Matchless' annual line of AIS... and another year bringing joy to your community is worth celebrating. This is a good AIS; but has only one serious flaw: the 12.2 ABV (or the whiskey barrel) is enough fuel to confuse my buds whether it is that or a dosage of cayenne.

2024 opens with a generous, large bubbled head. Of course, the ABV prevents the yeast from letting the foam persist, but that's what this style does. Smells are as advertised, cocoa and vanilla. As for Tastes, the "cayenne" comes in mid-palate and heats up my ears before the finish; and then finishes with a slight burn reminiscent of a serious mole'. At best, medium-mouthed, as the average for this style is viscous.

Get 2024, but forget what happened from November on.

16oz can into a tulip. Pours a deep dark brown with a thick mocha head.

Aroma is a blend of bitter chocolate, bourbon, charred oak, and vanilla.

Taste is likewise a blend of chocolate, bourbon, smoky oak, caramel, and vanilla. Warming alcohol on the finish. Has kind of an artificial flavor aspect, would be curious to know what actual ingredients were used.

Mouthfeel is medium heavy body, velvety smooth.

Overall a solid if traditional barrel-aged stout. Good but not outstanding. Maybe a bit sweet for my palate.
