Drank on tap at New Park Brewing, West Hartford, CT
Served in a snifter
Gorgeous appearance. The completely opaque, blackberry colored body was topped by a tight, frothy, finger-tall, light magenta crown that dropped to a bubbly ring. Droplets of lacing stuck along the glass.
The aroma was surprisingly subtle. I picked up a slight lactic sourness and a faint berry-like quality. This reminded me of some type of berry flavored yogurt. The nose remained quite muted until the drink’s end, when the berry notes really came forth. Blackberries were most apparent. Blueberries were detectable as well. Really sweet, fresh and bright.
The flavor profile was outstanding and far more fruit forward than the nose. Blackberry and blueberry notes dominated. I did not pick up the currants however. Moderate amount of lacto sourness. There was a snappy lemony twang on the back end and in the finish. Hint of tartness and acidity.
The mouthfeel was pretty straightforward. Medium bodied for the style. The liquid contained a crisp, larger bubbled effervescence that fluffed up slightly on the palate. As the beer sat, the carbonation settled and the beer turned somewhat creamy.
I find that many fruit-infused sours lack notable fruit flavor, but New Park Brewing’s Blender Series definitely puts the fruits front and center. This “Black and Blue” blackberry/black current/blueberry rendition was particularly impressive. I look forward to trying the boysenberry varaiation, which I was fortunate to grab a four pack of on the same visit.
