Drank from a 1 pint can purchased at New Park Brewing, West Hartford, CT
Canned on 09/25/19
Served in a teku
Big thanks to my sister Vanessa for grabbing me a few cans of this.
Dark brown/black appearance. Definitely quite thin in body for the style. The liquid was topped by a small, creamy, mocha colored crown that quickly fell to a clingy collar. A few droplets of lacing stuck along the glass.
The nose was pretty underwhelming. Super roasty and dry. Big roasted malt presence. Espresso came to mind. Some powdery yeasty notes were also apparent. This reminded me a lot more of an Irish dry stout than an imperial stout. As the beer sat, subtle coffee notes came forth. Touch of mocha-like sweetness.
The flavor profile followed the aroma. Uber roasty and dry. Roasted malts dominated. Again, espresso came to mind. Big charred notes on the back end. The roasty bitterness crescendoed in the finish and lingered long after the swallow. Like in the nose, some sweetness appeared as the beer warmed.
The mouthfeel might have been the best aspect of the beer. While the body was quite thin for the style, a fine, zippy carbonation gave the liquid a soft, creamy plushness. For 9% ABV, the alcohol was remarkably well hidden.
Ferrous drinks a lot more like an amped up version of Guinness than a typical imperial stout. New Park do a fantastic job with their hoppy beers and fruited sours, but their stouts leave a lot to be desired.
