a bit of a miss for me, at least when measured against the standards they have set for themselves with their other hop driven beers. this is suppose to be an new england style (read hazy) black ipa, which i have not seen done, at least in the outright manner of this one, so i was excited. it doesnt pour black at all, more like a watery brown ale, cloudy sure, but not even close to as dark as i would expect for the style, more brown or even deep amber than black, perhaps just light to prove that its hazy too, which seems stupid and beneath them, but why make it so light then? the flavor is fine, some piney and bitter hops we have all tasted before, a good dry hopped freshness, and some cocoa sort of malt character, but it feels thin to me even with the haze, and doesnt have the structural integrity of most of their other ipa types. i miss the darker roast, and get weak coffee rather than a confident or robust low end, which now i really miss in it. its a little monotone, but its not disagreeable, it just doesnt really do what it said it would, and its not close to as good as almost all the other beer i have had from these guys. this is a risky idea to some extent, the recipe should have been risky and sort of all in too, but its oddly tame or safe or something, which doesnt appeal much to me. i hope they go back and edit this one...

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
