Dark, shiny black body; thick and sticky light tan head, long lasting; patchy fingers and webs of foam decorate the glass. Big roasted and charred grain smell infused with hints of coffee. Beautiful sweet chocolate and charred grain husk and hop bitterness; some well-hidden esters peek through occasionally. Heavy body; smooth and glassy on the palate; robust residual sugars coat the palate; sweet overall yet with a dry edge.
There is no information to be found from either Outer Range or Cloudburst to detail the ingredients or brewers' intent, but this stout is nice and tasty, and strikes me as being an excellent, straightforward American stout. There is a wisp of suggestion of fruitiness in the flavor, so perhaps the yeast used or a mystery ingredient may lend itself to some kind of Belgian quality. I don't know, though. Regardless, this is a damn fine stout no matter what.
