Quaker City Malting Co. "Lemon Shrub"
12 fl. oz. can, production coded but without freshness dating (probably packaged May 15th based on an assumed Julian-date code of "1355").
$2 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA
Look: Clear with fairly large effervescent bubbles. A quick head of white passes just as it would on a lemon soda.
Smell: Like a lemon version of Fanta, it's lightly sweetish with an acidic and chalky edge (like citrus rind).
Flavor: Exactly as the aroma suggests. It's not as sweet as most lemon sodas; and the alcohol never shows, although at just 5.8% it shouldn't.
Feel: Medium-light in body with a dextrinous feel. Surprisingly smooth given the visible carbonation, it's just lightly crisp.
Overall: In comparison to something like "Not Your Father's Root Beer" this tastes more like a lemon soda than that most of the new alco-sodas do.
