Quaker City Malting Co. "Grapefruit Shrub"
12 fl. oz. can, coded "L8159 V9 222 2013" and sampled on 20 July 2018
$2.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Look: Clear with fairly large effervescent bubbles. A quick head of white passes just as it would on soda pop.
Smell: Bright grapefruit greets you simply upon opening the can. A closer whiff reveals that it smells like "Fresca".
Flavor: It's not as sweet nor grapefruit-like as the aroma suggests, in fact it's kind of dull. There's no malt flavor to it, nor any hops unless they're contributing to the grapefruit flavor although I'm quite sure that's coming from the "natural flavors". It's like carbonated, lightly sweet, watered down grapefruit juice. It's a little tart which I guess is refreshing though. It reminds me a little bit of a poorly made Sauvignon Blanc wine.
Feel: Medium-light in body and just lightly crisp.
Overall: As far as the new alco-sodas go this is pretty lame. There are much better examples. I certainly can't call it beer, and in fact I'm have a hard time even calling it a malternative as there's barely any malt to it. If the point is to have some fruity alcohol already pre-packed in a can there are better choices out there.
