Quaker City Malting Co. "Blackberry Shrub"
12 fl. oz. can, coded "L8160 V9 111 0800"
$2.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Note: Their products now read "Brewed and canned by Quaker City Malting Co., La Crosse, WI".
Look: Clear with fairly large effervescent bubbles. A quick head of white passes just as it would on soda pop, and perhaps even quicker. As might be expected there's no lacing.
Smell: Dark berry-like... Blackberry enough I guess. It doesn't appear as sweetish as most of their other products, nor is it as bold of an aroma.
Flavor: Mildly sweetish and tart with a dark berry flavor. At this point it could be almost anything, Elderberry or whatever, but again, blackberry still fits. There's not that much flavor to it really, and interestingly, it's not quite as refreshing as their other products, or is that just my perception because of the fruit they've chosen. It's slightly tart but perhaps less so than their others? Overall kind of dull. No malt character, and certainly no hops.
Feel: Medium-light in body with a moderately crisp carbonation.
Overall: In both the aroma and the flavor this is probably the weakest of their current line up but it remains just 90 calories and 5 grams of carbs. As I've said in reviews of their other products, it might have a use but I think there are better options available.
