Quaker City Malting Co. "Apple Shrub"
12 fl. oz. can, coded "L8160 V9 333 0418" and sampled on 21 July 2018
$2.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Look: Clear with fairly large effervescent bubbles. A quick head of white passes just as it would on soda pop. Held to the light you can see that there is some color to it, just a light tint of yellow. No lacing.
Smell: Bright sweet green apple like a Jolly Rancher candy.
Flavor: It's not as sweet as the aroma suggests it might be but there is some apple flavor to it, perhaps similar to a light cider or watered down apple juice. There's no malt flavor to it, nor any hops. The apple flavor is more like a red than green apple upfront, with the green coming on in the finish. I'm quite sure both coming from the "natural flavors" although there is some apple cider vinegar added to give it a little bit of tartness.
Feel: Light-medium in body and just lightly crisp.
Overall: At 4.0% alcohol by volume with just 90 calories this could pass was a decent enough diet drink - I certainly won't call it beer. Still I think I'd prefer a white wine spritzer.
