Collaboration with Faction Brewing.

Subtle Variance is the meeting of minds between two brewers who believe in the power of exquisitely-hopped pale ales. In the spirit of collaboration and friendship with Faction Brewing, we combined our two brewery’s styles and approaches to hoppy beers, ultimately landing on two delicious, subtly variant pale ales! We utilized Mosaic, Simcoe, & Nelson in both new and traditional hopping schedules, resulting in an awesome mix of prominent fruit & citrus notes, light pine, and medium bitterness.

Hops: Mosaic, Simcoe and Nelson
Malts: 2 Row, Light Crystal and Carafoam

This has a little scratch in the back of the throat, but it's a clear golden amber brew. Modest foam in the Chimay chalice. Prickly carbonation and a spritzy mouthfeel. Aroma of green pepper, green pineapple. Flavors of green melon, lime, unripe citrus.

Light body, extremely fragrant, an ideal thirst quencher with the tangy taste. Overall, this is a thoroughly drinkable hoppy light ale. From the 16 oz can purchased at Bine & Vine.

Grabbed a 4-pack of this, along with a 4-pack each of Clever Kiwi and Carlsbad Crush on our way home from Santa Barbara. This one was released the previous Friday (six days prior to this review). Facebook description of the release called it, “Subtle Variance is the meeting of minds between two brewers who believe in the power of exquisitely-hopped pale ales. Really looking forward to it.

Poured a medium yellow clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of rocky-to-frothy off-white head. Lots of fast moving bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass at a pretty quick pace. Decent spotty lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Initially smelled big Mosaic, followed next by Simcoe with lesser Nelson. Specific flavors were floral, mango, guava, mixed berry, papaya, pine, black pepper, white grape and herbal. Much of the same from the can with the addition of some earthy malt. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted even better than the nose. For hops got Mosaic and Simcoe up front (closer in flavor than the nose), with lingering Nelson. Got the characteristics of all three hops, in order mango, guava, papaya, pine, black pepper, viney mixed berry, herbal, grass and white grape. (Taste - 4.50)

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Dry, bitter finish. (Feel - 4.50)

Was back and forth on almost every category, but in terms of pale ales this was top tier. Just a world-class West Coast pale ale. (Overall - 4.50)
