473 mL can from the brewery; dated Mar 14 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy pale yellow colour, churning up an inch of bubbly, foamy white head that settles off within two or three minutes. A frothy collar and thin cap remain, with some spotty lace deposition after a sip or two - looks ok so far. Light aromas of gritty grains, doughy malts and white bread, with a faint whisper of lemon zest - it's dull, but also clean.
Not great, but not bad either - definitely on the lighter side for this style. Grainy sweetness is the primary flavour, with suggestions of white bread, lemon peel and apples providing some semblance of variety. Grainy, mildly fruity finish followed by an off-dry aftertaste. Very light in body, with aggressive carbonation that prickles the palate mercilessly; a little frothy at first, but it becomes smoother and more enjoyable over the course of the session. Easy to drink and fairly refreshing.
Final Grade: 3.28, a C+. Backpaddle Blonde Ale is about as plain jane as craft beer gets these days - but having said that, blonde ales are not known for being an exciting style, and this is not necessarily a poor one, just an exceptionally boring one. Any beer drinker who might reach for a light lager or a pale wheat ale to wet their whistle on a hot summer evening could conceivably use this for the same thing... or in other words, it'll do in a pinch. Not a beer to go out of your way for, but I wouldn't discourage others from giving it a shot.
