Appearance: A finger and a half of head that did not retain very well or lace. The body is a nice clear brown with crimson highlights that shows low carbonation.
Smell: Dry and nutty with a backing of toffee malt which warming helped bring out, but didn't have a lot of potency.
Taste: Starts with malt toffee malt with a hint of spice that turns to a bit more of a mixture of tree nuts and a touch of wood and pine hops. The malt permeates the beer, but it doesn't seem quite sweet enough.
Mouthfeel: Despite its appearance, the carbonation is present but seems to focus on the end of the beer. Aftertaste is a mix of toffee and nut that seems to cloy a little bit. Transitioning is good but doesn't seem like it has a lot of distance to cover.
Drinkability: Medium bodied, that goes down easy but that cloying somewhat hampers it here. While I often lament that malt doesn't make a big presence on a lot of beers, I can't help but feel a bit more dryness would help this one out.
Final Thoughts: Pretty much a solid Brown ale, but not one that's going to blow your socks off here. I can see this being a good at either the start or end of winter or with nachos for some reason. Worth a whirl but wouldn't go out of my way for it.
