On tap at brewery:
Clear pale golden body has a modest head because the beertender wanted to give us a full pour. Nonetheless, a fuzz of white graces the top of this beer the whole way down. The lacing is impenetrable until you let evaporation work. Beautiful.
How to rate the nose of a rye IPA? Rye-wise, the force is strong in this one. Rye malt even more than bread, non-hop driven for sure. Citrus hops bleed through the edges, but in the end: rye, check; IPA: eh...
A clean malt profile on the taste would seem to be a vehicle for the rye, but it doesn’t drive through as much as expected from the nose. It is definitely there, but a grapefruit-leadin citrusy pale ale is what really presents in flavor. Rye adds a little spice and a hint of reedy woodiness.
In the end, I really liked this as a rye pale ale. Bitterness seemed light (to me) fir an IPA, though it was helped by a fairly dry feel. Splitting hairs on all the variables, I’d love to see this on tap next time I visited.
