Pours an impenetrable, inky black in color, topped with a thin dark tan head. Lacing is minimal. Totally deceiving.
HUGE nose. Notes of hazelnuts and coffee, with a touch of spice (cinnamon is used, but it is light on the nose). Robust... oily... almost getting coconut and butterfat, too.
Lighter on the palate than I’d expected, and very fruity and tropical! Banana notes on top of not-so-subtle coffee, along with a lighter cinnamon note. The hazelnuts are mixed into this maelstrom of flavor in a complimentary fashion, but this is an unsubtle and robust dessert beer (I’ll stop short of calling it a “pastry stout “), and a sipper at 12.6% ABV.
Super-drinkable for its strength.
A collaborative brew with Lua Brewing in Des Moines, Iowa, I expect that this “DONG” will be a hot ticket if it ever gets out to the larger market.
