First had: on tap at the brewpub in Tampa

Poured a slightly hazed copper color, with a small white head that sank to a ringlet, and left dabs of soapy lacing on the glass. Sweet malts in the nose, light fruit esters, somewhat floral/herbal hops. Didn't really taste like a barleywine at all. There was a medicinal/phenolic quality to it that is present in some barleywines, but it was more an off-taste here. Flavors of toasted grains, ripe fruits, distant herbal hop bitterness...and spiked with vodka. Seriously, it tasted to me like they got the high ABV in this by spiking an off-flavored pale ale with vodka or moonshine. Body was light-medium, thin for the style it was supposed to be. Not very good, and not very exemplary of any style of barleywine. I think "boilermaker" might be more suiting.

Arrives in a hefty goblet. Thick film of off-white foam atop chestnut brown liquid. Clear and bright. Retention sucks.
Smell is roasted malt, slight hops, caramel.
Taste is big with lots of roasted malt, whiskey (a ton), caramel and some hops. Huge alcohol bloom, biggest I ever experienced.
A bigger tasting beer than 10% ABV would suggest. Had 15-18% that was less in-your-face than this. Full bodied, medium effervescence, slightly drying finish. A good beer but extremely bold.

Served on tap at TBBC in Tampa FL. I'll start by saying I don't typically like barleywines and this was no exception. Don't really understand the style. My ratings which I intend to be against the style, may be lower sinply because I don't think it tastes good.

Pours a crisp looking medium amber. See through and with minor amounts of foam. Didn't really get much out of the nose - some esthers, alcohol. The Taste - an astringent, puckering, medicinal taste. Burns, and difficult. The latter half was a down the hatch.

Is this good compared to other barleywines? I'm not the one to answer that question.

Poured a deep mahogany with dark tan head two fingers in width that fades slowly and leaves filmy legs and spider web lacing.

The aroma has hints of brandy with deep, burnt dark sugars, molasis, and toffee balanced out with earthy and faint floral notes. Complex.

Flavor is smooth, rich and elegantly balanced. Overall toffee sweetness with vanilla hints dominates but its balanced with earhty, grassy notes that keep it from being cloying.

Rich, thick and smooth

Overall an excellent, smooth, and easy drinking sipper.

Poured on-tap at the Tampa Bay Brewing Co brewery in Ybor City. The beer was served in a chalice, and it pours a crystal-clear ruby-red coloring with a thin film coating of head. Supersweet roasted caramel aromas, with a slight brandy smell. Flavors are pungent and strong, riding a full and round body that is slightly slick and oily. Flavors are rich honey, caramel, and booze. There is a slight smokiness to the aftertaste, and the booze becomes astringent, making the finish rather sharp, and a little harsh. Great flavors, but definitely a sipper, as most Barleywines are. Very rich and very tasty!

A: This beer was served in very heavy chalice with an amber body with a very red/maroon highlights. There was no head to speak of except the thin line of lace along the edge of the glass.

S: A very sweet fruity nose with hints of caramel malts, maple, and booze (10% ABV). Very little hops in the smell, but not much. Overall very pleasant.

T/M: A good flavor with an upfront malty sweetness with a balance bitter hoppiness that follows (husband thought it was too bitter though). Kind of earthy notes with other flavors that include sweet caramel and dark fruits. Smooth and crisp, kind of has a thin syrupy texture.

D: I really enjoyed this beer. Had it with dessert and it was perfect. My husband didn't enjoy it too much, but this was my first barely wine. Definitely would drink this again.

Pours a reddish amber. No much head and very light thin lace. Smells sweet with malt and some citrus. Also alcohol. This beers ABV appears to jump around from batch to batch. I've seen reviews @ 13% ABV down to 9%. It was @ 10% for me today.

Pretty tasty. A little sweet. Probably the best beer here @ TBBC, though.

Appearance: Dark amber color with a weak head that quickly dissipates.

Smell: Aroma of caramel/maple and some fruitiness.

Taste: Somewhat sweet with little bitterness

Mouth-feel: Almost syrupy, but with a wine-like feel.

Drinkability: This was my first barleywine, but it is a very good after-dinner drink. But, with the 13.2% abv (usually 10%) from this batch, I couldn't drink too many.

All-in-all a very good treat; I will certainly look into trying new varieties of the style.

Enjoyed on-tap at the brewpub. The winner in their lineup, and do not leave Tampa without trying. A bit lacey, reddish body. Not as fresh tasting as the rest of their lineup. Drying finish, crisp, very smooth drinking. A little woodiness, a bit biased toward sweet. Very good hoppiness.

Draft at brewery numerous attempts across 2007. 10.4% ABV. Pours reddish copper with thin off white ring of foam. I get almost no aroma. The flavor is malty sweet and sugary and maybe a touch of caramel. Above midway the caramel and the alcohol flavors meet and mix to create an almost medicine note that only grows worse as more beer is consumed. Overall this beer doesn't work for me. Tastes like it was fermented way too hot creating Vick's Cherry Cough drop experience. I'm hoping they'll do a better job next time around.

A: Pours a lovely amber hue with a solid fluffy head into the house chalice. The retention is so so but it does leave behind some chunky lace.

S: Nice malty sweetness with hints of caramel malt and brown sugar.

T: English style no doubt about it. Big on the malt with hints of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar dominating. No real hops noted.

M: Full bodied and thick.

D: Rather drinkable for a barleywine of this ABV. I would like a touch of hops though.

This is a nice barleywine for being one that doesn't seem to be allotted the years of aging that makes the difference between good and great. Pours a clear mahogany with a little white head and minimal lacing. Plenty of sweet malt in the aroma and flavor, while the alcohol quietly announces itself. Bittering is a little shy of where it should be to duke it out with the malts, and hop flavors are kept on a short leash. There are hints of the dark fruit and caramel flavors that develop in a barleywine, but they're either in short supply or just haven't been given the time they need. Kudos to TBBC for brewing an intense beer, but this seems to suffer from the time pressure that is common to most brewpubs. It would be interesting to see where this might end up if it was aged for a couple of years. I rated drinkability high, not that it is sessionable, but simply against other of its barleywine peers.

This was my first experience with barley wine style ale, so I can't compare it to others in the "canon." However, I really enjoyed this beer. It is served in a goblet and has a pretty molasses color. Despite the high alcohol content, it has a sweet flavor with no discernable bitterness. To me this was not a full bodied beer, which I appreciated because I think it would have been overwhelming when combined with the sweetness. Not overly hoppy or complex but had a unique taste reminiscent of caramel and some mixed fruit flavors. Nice as an after dinner beer.

Smell: Modest aroma of caramel, a touch of earthy hops and some fusel alcohol

Taste: Starts with a rich caramel flavor that provides some depth; not a lot of bitterness or complexity

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, almost syrupy, with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: Easy to drink, but lacks the hop presence and malty complexity of great barleywines

I did the sampler at Tampa Bay Brewing Company one day last month, and this is the one that really stood out in my memory.
A big, bold beer, the color of medium-stained maplewood. Smell is moderately sweet, a bit caramely and with a bit of a hop dryness. The taste is pretty much what you'd hope an American barleywine to be. Nice, sweet but very well balanced with the hops, clean finish, not buttery, and a bit of a thick mouthfeel. I liked this quite a bit, and would order this just as soon as I'd order a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot.

other notes: I was told by the brewer that the beer that I had was near the end of the tanks and has aged just about as long as this flavor gets to age. I was impressed, but I would imagine it'd taste a bit different when it was young.

Poured an amber brownish tan hue. Nice clean white head. There was a mild lace left in the goblet. Smelled of malt and caramel sweetness subtle maple hints. Tasted of a nice caramel malt with a very drinkable character. Smooth and enjoyable. Looked and tasted true to style. This was a milder style of barley wine but it may be a bit better with some aging. There was no hint of alcohol in the flavor or aftertaste which was very appealing. Very nice flavor and taste. Good mouth feel and body to this beer. Medium bodied with a mild carbonation. I am taken back by all the styles that the TBBC has and the creative style in which they are crafted. Great desert beer or after dinner drink that I enjoyed a lot.

I see by the previous reviews this one didn’t make many friends. But my review may entice you to try this one if you make it to TBB. I believe they improved the brew – or I got a hold of a very good batch.

Presented to me in a goblet, I immediately saw a very clear, pale bourbon brew, with a minimal white head – which did produce some thin sticky laces on the way down.

The taste was much more subdued than I expected. Notes of cherry, raisons and bourbon danced lightly in the mouth – nothing too sweet or sticky. To me, this was exceptionally smooth and drinkable – no alcohol burn at all.

Great relaxing, deck brew (wish I had some in a bottle).

Poured amber with red highlights and very small beige ring around the top.
Smelled of alcohol with maybe a small hint of licorice (sp?), and bark. The taste was heavy on the dates and even heavier alcohol. An overbite that would probably drop a moose so I know where they got the name. Hops overpowered the entire drink to the point of not being enjoyable. Grass and maybe some lemon followed
The sting of hops and alcohol didn't leave me with a welcome taste. I don't like giving bad reviews to good brewers but I'm going to have to here.
Sorry guys!

I can't say I'm terribly knowledgeable when it comes to barley wines, though I've had one or two. I certainly seemed to enjoy this one quite a bit more than some of the other reviewers. I'll confess, it's a tad harsh, acidic, but in a unique, citrus way that I rather liked.

Goes well with the bread the brewpub serves. Give it a try.

Another beer I got on a large sampler tray at the Tampa Bay Brewing Co. I notice an interesting sweet aroma in this barley wine that I can not quite place. This is sweeter and heavier-bodied than other barley wines I have had. But it is still good and not as harsh as some of its brethren in the style. I recommend it.

This should be called "human-killer" barley wine as it certainly isn't palatable for mooses and unfit for most other mammals.
Made with 1200 lbs of american pale malts and 10 additions of Tomahawk hops.

Clear, very light-copper in color, forming a small white head with average retention and lacing. Color is certainly very pale for the style. Aroma is fruity with no perceptable alcohol, fresh water, caramel, and citric hops. Taste is very medicinal and very fruity, with weak dark fruit character and medium intensity herbal bitterness. Mouthfeel is dense, harsh, and syrupy. Yuck. Very poor example of the style.
