Appearance: Arrives fudge colored with a modest head that slowly fades; a few squiggles and shards lingers

Smell: Roasted and chocolate malt aromatics with a hint of earthy hop tones

Taste: Roast and chocolate forward with a touch of coffee; after the swallow, some earthy hop tones intrude; the finish is crisp and clean

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A nice example of the style

Nice roasted malt aroma and flavor with coffee and light chocolate notes. Nice balance; malty with no sweetness. Light-medium bodied and fairly smooth with a dry roasty finish. Delicious !

Poured from a 16 oz can into a Willi Becher Glass

The beer pours nearly black with about three fingers worth of frothy tan head that slowly recedes leaving behind just the slightest amount of lacing.

The aroma is of roasted malt, cocoa, just a hint of coffee and a mild breadiness.

The flavor is similar to the aroma; roasted malt, cocoa, and an underlying earthiness. Nicely balanced and very clean with a slightly bitter finish. Medium/light bodied and moderately carbonated. Very clean and drinkable.

Overall, this is a very nice beer, and a decent example of the style. It does seem like it is missing something to get it to that next level

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear jet black in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and faint to moderate chestnut brown + cola brown + amber colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall fizzy sudsy foamy tan head that reduces to a large patch of thin film covering approximately 90% of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of roasted + chocolate malts with minimal amounts of sweetness. Light aromas of earthy hops and light to moderate aromas of lager yeast.

T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate flavors of roasted + chocolate malts with minimal amounts of sweetness. Light flavors of freshly brewed dark roasted coffee and light to moderate flavors of lager yeast. Finally there are light flavors of earthy hops. The beer has a light to moderate amount of roasty bitterness which fades away pretty quickly leaving a relatively clean finish.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp with a relatively clean finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a pleasantly light crisp + clean mouthfeel. Enjoyable with really great roasty + chocolate malt flavors and aromas. Very well done - would definitely get this one again.
