i always think of revision of makers of such modern and often ambitious beers, so when i encounter a more classic and even basic one like this, i am always a little surprised. deep brown not quite black pour with a frothing inch of light brown foam, thick and lasting, this looks pretty bubbly for the style too, big bubbles like a soda pop. notes of dry cocoa, leather, and light smoke, this has pretty good depth to me on the grain side but never gets to bitter on the roast, simple in so many ways, little from yeast or hops. the flavor follows, nice chocolatey center to this without the sweetness, nicely done there. lighter in body for a porter, and in some ways hits more like a more robust brown ale, maybe right on the line. drier in the finish than many of these, a little thin in body perhaps, but i dont mind the lightness and all the carbonation. cocoa powder, chestnut, and roast to finish, pleasant aftertaste from the dark malts. nice overall porter, sometimes its good to be reminded that these guys can do just about anything well, even the classics. quality brew, even if its not one of their most memorable...
