Tropical, citrusy and herbaceous, the brewery of Battery Steele goes south, way, way, way south for a unique and highly refreshing, land-down-under hop bomb of a New England styled IPA that is as flavorful as it is crushable.

Pastel gold and casting a rustic, turbid haze on the glass, Kineo rises with a billowing ivory froth and a bursting bouquet of musty tropical fruit, rip roaring citrus and a botanical blend of chive, hemp and hay. A slight cakey taste and texture layers onto the tongue with suggestions of shortcake, honey and cereal.

The enduring wheaten malts provide a pillow of softness for a middle palate that's simply chocked full of fruit. Leading flavors of mango, apricot, pineapple, passionfruit and gooseberry, the New Zealand hops are evident, even with a succulent tanginess of exotic fruits. Citrus components are of under ripened varieties of lime, pink grapefruit and tangerine to bring a full on sherbet-like taste. Trending herbal and softly bitter, the hop's peppery resins are surrounded by orange leaf, geranium, green tea and sassafras.

Medium bodied and creamy throughout, the beer's finish is of verbena, tea and once the alcohol is sensed, a spice of gin has a late showing on the throat. A medium long linger of dank fruit peels once again evokes a whimsy of cannabis into a drying finish of refreshment, crispness and cleanliness.

Can dated 6/05/17 poured into a tulip. Pour is golden color with a soapy white head that fades leaving minimal lacing when consumed. The smell was off: metallic, feet, citrus hops, oniony. the taste kind of followed but a bit more onion notes than i would prefer. the feel was nice and smooth with a dryness in the back! Overall i loved their DIPA so ill keep them on my radar.

I understand the predicament that some folks faced and called this more like a pale ale vs IPA. Regardless of what one calls it, it's a pretty tasty brew.
She drinks crisp, light tropical notes and ending with lime zest in finish.

I rated this as I drank it Sunday but it must not have saved. This is a pale IPA with a slightly dry mouthfeel and agressive carbonation. Hop forward in flavor wit mostly tropical fruit notes. There is a light pale malt backbone on this one.

16 oz can poured into a pint glass canned on 5/11

A: Burnished Amber body with a slight tan color. Head is a creamy white affair that sits on top and stays.

S: Light citrus and pineapple with a yeasty smell

T: Very light citrus, grapefruit, pineapple, and a little yeast.

M: Medium bodied decent carbonation.

O: This drinks like a pale ale more than IPA the flavors are there, but they are fairly muted.

16 oz can dated 5/11/17 (1 week old) - got the can from Spruce Creek Provisions in Kittery, ME

Pours a hazy pale yellow with a just-off-white pillowy 2 finger head.

Not a strong aroma but pleasantly smelling of orange, nectarine and lemon.

Taste follows the smell. This is an unusual hop flavor variation (Mosaic in the mix?) that really works well - I've had nothing quite like it really and it tastes great. The hop takes the lead, riding on top a sweet, moderate malt base. The finish is the hop flavor. As it warms up the orange flavor really comes out and this beer shines. Damn!

Nice fresh feel to it with a lighter but sweet hop and low bitterness - typical of Portland hazy IPAs. Not too seltzery either.

This is the first I've heard of Battery Steele Brewing but I will be looking out for more of their wares. This is a superior IPA - and I say this in seriousness - perhaps the best Portland hazy I've had to date. I will be making the trip up to see what else they have... but first I'm heading back down to the beer store to get the rest of it :)

Oh, I should say the name Kineo drew me in. As a flintknapper and Maine archaeology enthusiast Mt. Kineo in Moosehead Lake holds a special place for me. Now this beer will too.

12 oz. in a scotch glass type thing at Sonny's in Portland. On draft.

Appearance: A bright yellow with a minimal white head.

Aroma: Very fruity, tropical and citrusy. Some pine. Faint cereal grain type note.

Taste: Very tropical. Kiwi, mango. Pine, grapefruit. Really delightful. Fun and flavorful.

Mouthfeel: Hoppy with bitterness but easy on palate.

Overall: A gem of an IPA. Excited to try more from this brewery.

Pours a hazy bright orange color with a beautiful white head. Leaves a nice ring of lacing before settling into a creamy film that rests atop the beer.

Loads of pineapple and cantaloupe on the nose, with some orange rind and very subtle cracker malt on the back.

This is legitimately one of the most balanced IPA's I've ever had. Sweet notes of pineapple and melon up front, followed by some citrus rind and bitter pine. The finish is bready and faintly spicy.

The feel is medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Dry, yet smooth. Creamy, yet crisp. Bitterness coats the mouth a bit too long.

This IPA is quite good. Nothing spectacular but a juicy, well-balanced beer. Definitely worth a try.

Pours golden orange very hazy. One finger white head that fades quickly. Nice lacing that holds its place. Aroma of orange flesh. Taste citrus, orange peel, pineapple, plight pine needles ad a faint mango finish. After taste has a lingering light bitterness to it. First one from battery steel. Look forward to more from them.
