It started out poorly, maybe a bottle defect or something - it broke at the lip and I wasn’t sure where the pieces all went to.
The beer itself was much darker than expected, darker than many stouts I have had. No carbonation at all; whether due to the bottle defect or it’s intrinsic to the beer I wasn’t sure.
The taste is a lot of dark fruit, earthy leather, plum, figs, and I’m not sure what Brett is but it was likely in there.
The feel was still, viscous and, while not unpleasant, I drank it very cautiously as I didn’t know where the glass shards were. (None were in my glass)
OA, tasty enough, but the broken bottle rather threw me.

First beer review of 2024 LFG!! The only other Barleywine (and the first beer) I tried from Buttonwoods was rather bad in my opinion, but they’ve redeemed themselves with other beers. I was a but hesitant to pick this one up because of that bad experience, but the thought of a Brett Barleywine got the best of me. Let’s pop it open and find out what it’s all about

Pours a very dark brown with 2 fingers of creamy tan head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves decent lacing

The brett makes its presence known immediately upon smelling. I’m picking up on aromas of tart cherry, plum skin, cacao nib, toasted oak, tannic red wine, sweet caramel, earthy bourbon, and light raspberry

Things get even sharper in taste. It’s still good but the brett hurts it a bit. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting sweet toffee, jammy raspberry, plum skin, cocoa powder, charred oak, blackberry, old leather, light bourbon, and vanilla. The swallow brings notes of cherry pit, plum skin, charred oak, burnt caramel, tannic red wine, spent coffee beans, leafy hops, tobacco, and light vanilla

A medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a sharp beer. Finishes mostly dry with a refreshing tartness

This is a wholly unique beer. It strats pretty far from Barleywine at points but it’s very interesting
