Dr. Tim's Traditional Ale

Grain, leafy hop and biscuity pale malts. Light to medium in body, medium carbonation and fine length in the finish. Has fair hop bite but seemed to me more like a premium lager in terms of character rather than a golden ale. Crisp, light and refreshing.

Pours gold with a quickly fading head.
Nose shows soft fruity esters, grainy malt and cooked vegetable notes.
Flavours focus on the grainy malt and soft vegetable character.

 

 

Not bad, but nothing special. Overall it's just a basic lighter ale that's lightly filtered, good carbonation, and moderately hopped. The result is a drinkable beer, that is refreshing enough, but not very remarkable. However with after a few sips it's also a bit coarse; better suited for warmer weather or a quick slam or two. Don't know if I'd want more than a couple.

 

 

Enjoyed this one from a little can while on the ferry from Cape Jervis to Kangaroo Island.

Pours a pale straw colour, lots of cloud. Head is modest with visible bubbles. Fizzles out quite quickly. Lacing is not bad, but doesn't stick to the glass. Looks OK - quite similar to Coopers Pale.

Nose is quite tangy, hints of weak citrus juice with a bready yeast character, light like white bread. Yeah, slightly sour, but mostly weak. Not great.

Watery front with a carbolic tingle, develops a bit of a sour character, again with that weak lemon juice kind of zing. Has a gritty pride of ringworm flavour on the mid-palate and develops hints of bark and soil towards the back. Trails off at the end, not leaving much hang, for which I'm grateful. But palate is mostly simple, so not great. Not much to it and kind of lacks profile. Bland, in a word.

Mouthfeel is the worst part though, very harsh, way over-carbonated. Just very sharp on the tongue, not enough malt to gloss up the body.

For all its faults though it's not too offensive, enjoyable enough as a simple drinking brew.

Dr Tims is just pale ale in a can, the reason it appears in a can was that it was marketed for the asian region and due to the sometimes bad feelings about beer in cans, they changed the name from pale ale to the dr tims brand.

there is no real difference between dr tims and Pale ale.

i prefer the look of wheat or dark beers, the appearance of the yellow beers just dont catch my eye.

I too was quite surprised to see this beer.. was not expecting a Coopers in a can. It lured me in with its can like beerishness and I just had to buy one to see what it was like.

Poured a yellowy gold colour with a very thick cappuccino foam type head that lasted quite a while and left a reasonable amount of lacing down the glass.

Smelled of barley and malt with a slight citrus undertone. Much more pleasant than expected.

Tasted very malty with a bit of a citrus and barley. Had a little bit of a bite on the way down.

Mouthfeel was quite light and wasn't as fizzy as I expected given how frothy it was.

I actually expected worse than what I got and it is actually quite drinkable. I think next time I'll have to buy more than one.

A rather unusual new offering from Coopers - a can-conditioned ale (the first one of those I've had). Cool green can which probably appeals to all those people who want to drink a nice Coopers but hate buying it in the bottle. Or maybe the extra weight of the bottle is too much for those Coopers lovers attempting to climb Everest. In fact, I don't know why it's around - it looks nothing like a Coopers, although it says Coopers on the label... maybe they're trying to lure people in who think they don't like Coopers but find they like Dr Tim's. Maybe it's an experiment. Still, I'm glad I came across it (in the central station bottle shop in Adelaide). The bottle shop attendant claimed it was an attempt to produce a canned equivalent to the Coopers Pale Ale...

Appearance: Cooper's Pale Ale Colour, dull cloudy dark gold/light amber. Head retention low - dissipates quickly. Medium carbonation - a small amount of lacing. Doesn't look too good towards the end of the beer.

Smell: I thought this was going to be bad, and this may seem superstitious and foolish, but it seems that the canning (or can-conditioning) has kept the hop aroma fresher and quite unique? Fruity, like a good English Pale Ale - stone fruit, citrus and barley malt.

Taste: Surprisingly good - looks a little 'specially formulated'! Very little aluminium taste, which is nice... more stone fruit, malty barley, nuts and stuff. I'd like to give this more because I'm really enjoying it, but it doesn't live up to some classics of the style I've embibed and loved.

Mouthfeel: Good smooth, pretty full-bodied, satisfying.

Drinkability: Excellent. Take this camping. A great canned brew.

Notes: I am really impressed with this. I hope it comes over to the Eastern states. The best canned brew I've had - I was hard on it due to its interpretation of the style. Memorable.
