Coopers have re-named this beer from their 'session ale', to Pacific Pale Ale. Regardless of the name, this is Coopers entering the market to compete with the success and popularity of Stone & Wood's Pacific Ale. Probably hence the name change. It's meant to be an easy drinking, stone fruity sessionable ale that's not as heavy as a traditional Australian or American Pale Ale.
Look: Pored out of the crystal blue can, into my Arundel Brewing Pint glass. Hazy yellow colour, with HEAPS of yeast chunks floating around the beer. That's a common sight with Coopers Beers, as they're well known for secondary fermentation. Frothy finger of white head, Lots of carbonation streaming up the glass. Looks pretty inviting.
Smell: Zesty citrus aroma, lemon, lime and orange. Am picking up a metallic twang, which i'm hoping is from the can, light pale malt sweetness. Smells the part of a refreshing summer beer.
Taste: Follows the nose nicely. Crisp Lemon, lime peel, slight sweetness, decent bitterness, slightly spicy throughout the sip. Not packing a huge amount of flavour, but nicely mellow.
Feel: Highly carbonated, thin body makes an ideal summer 'session' ale. Highly refreshing, but a tad watery. Being 4.2% abv it's not going to have a whole lotta body to it.
Overall. It's crisp, it's refreshing, and it's at an ABV where you can have a few without getting overly tanked. It's not as good as Stone & Woods Pacific Ale, but it's a decent imitation. Like their XPA, it's an Okay beer, certainly not as good as their staple pale ales (original & sparkling) but not bad for summer time. Would drink this on a hot day over any Australian macro lager every time.
