For this beer, we blended an amber saison that underwent primary fermentation in a Journeyman whiskey barrel with a separate blend of aged batches of Faible and then aged the resulting blend in a barrel from our friends at Manic Meadery. It came to them as a gin barrel and they then aged a marionberry mead in it. The resulting beer is extremely complex with notes of red and black berries, oak, anise, and a hint of whiskey.

This is the worst afterthought I have ever had. Pour beautifully with clear pale golden body and a full white head and lacing. Smell is boozy, with various mulled berries, lemon, big oak and yeast, balance is off but more experimental seeming than anything. Taste is the first part of the disaster: whiskey cuts through with watery wood and sweeter booze, lemon grass is huge and snarling, mint aftertaste hints is odd, otherwise cola, wild yeast, lime, more booze present. Thin and watery feel, no motion or depth, carb too high to boot. It's complex but not enjoyable, like a soured strong ale in a weak body

Pale golden amber with a slight pinkish hue that results in a peachy impression. Billowing head of white foam, puffing up like a soufflé. Lasting collar of lacing, broken sheet nearly coats the entire glass. Lasting surface coverage.

Aroma is really unique, botanical spice forward, it almost reminds me of potpourri. Gin botanicals, juniper, anise, lavender. Lots going on, very complex, but also easy to appreciate.

Taste is lightly tart with a ton of unusual barrel character and spent gin botanicals. Oaky vanilla, anise, dried lemon, floral elements, a grainy note in the aftertaste.

Well carbed and light bodied, which works well with the level of complexity. Overall I really enjoyed it. Recommended to gin lovers and Scratch fans. If you’re spice-averse, maybe skip it, but it’s not super spiced.

Congrats to Afterthought on their 5 year anniversary!
