"Mixed fermentation IPA with cantaloupe melon and rhubarb"
What's this? A teuly interesting IPA indeed? Cantaloupe melon and rhubarb? Give me a break! But it really smells and tastes like that, especially like melon. It somehow continues the hoppiness and adds this kind of fruitiness to it, even though the nose has some grassy overtones above. What enhances the whole flavor is the mixed fermentation, wonder if they used some spontaneous bacteria? Because it reminds me of Brettanomycus or Lambic, that Belgian kind of toothpaste sick yeast...
So we are dancing on the borderline here. Is this awful or is it outstanding? Smelling into it makes you believe that it is just the hops and some exotic fruitiness. The first sip sinks you into the melon pool and then comes the Belgian yeast. Very interesting transition overall but as I don't prefer (or rather, prefer NOT TO) drink Belgian ales, for me that final yeast is kind of a showstopper. I would be much better off with a citrusy, bitter aftertaste instead of the toothpaste fluorid sh*t.
Still, it is drinkable and interesting enough - until you get sick of it. The idea itself is worth praising, very well done, Mad Scientist fame, although these brewer guys could have perfected it into something much more of a bullseye than this. Once is okay, should I say plenty to venture into such terrotories.
