Merit Brewing - Nowhere Bourbon BA
Got this from hopsolutely this past summer
From a 500ml bottle into a snifter
Vintage 2018
Bourbon BA Imperial Stout
APPEARANCE: Pitch black pour yields a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy, mocha dark tan head with very good retention. Pitch black body with no carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a solid wisp and clings to the glass. A splotchy wisp remains until the end leaving lots of lacing on the glass. Really good looking.
SMELL: Solid nose of bourbon, oak, toffee and butterscotch, vanilla cream and milk chocolate. Plenty bold and nice barrel character.
TASTE: Bourbon, oak, butterscotch, vanilla cream and milk chocolate sweetness up front, with some bourbon and alcohol at the swallow. Big finish of bourbon, oak, wood, milk chocolate, butterscotch and toffee sweetness lingers on the palate. Flavorful.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Semi-creamy on the palate, goes down a bit foamy and finishes mouth-coating. A bit of a burn and some heat lingers.
OVERALL: Solid stuff. A bit spirit and booze heavy but there’s definitely lots of character here. Very good looking as well. One of the better barrel aged imperial stouts from Ontario this year and something I’d very much like to revisit in the future. Thanks again, hopsolutely!

I'm not a big fan of this style, but this one is delicious for what it is. None of the 'mealiness' I often taste in Imperials; this one was a smooth blend of burnt malt, chocolate, & prominent but pleasant booziness. Pretty damned delicious.
