From a 500ml bottle served almost straight from the fridge at 9 degrees Celsius into a TeKu glass. Bottled on: Apr.03.2018 – which makes this about 2.5 months old. The bottle was picked up straight from the brewery. My expectations are about average as my experience with Merit is very limited.
Look: The beer pours a murky straw with 5cm of dense, billowy, white head that dissipates into a partial film within 3+ minutes. Decent lacing with good retention. It's a pretty good-looking beer for something so hazy – you know I'm not a fan of the OJ look.
Aroma: Moderate strength and balanced. Pronounced sweet apricot and a lactic sharpness with some citrus reminiscent of diluted orange juice. Moderate doughy pale malt (rye). The aroma is quite simple and sets the expectations for something refreshing. The dry nose is reminiscent of Ryvita crispbread making me think that quite a bit of rye was used in the grist.
Taste: Follows the aroma with moderate strength, sharp-ish balance, and low perceived bitterness. The sour palate opens up with notes of citrus (sweet orange & lemon) and apricot which give way to a doughy – almost crackery – pale malt. The medium-short length finish is faint and quite balanced with notes of apricot and malt.
Feel: Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Puckering and sharp with an off-dry finish and no apparent alcohol warming, astringency, or harshness of any kind.
Overall: Merit's Your Own Way is a decent enough beer. It's bright and quite pleasant with good drinkability. The salt and coriander qualities are quite understated for me – to the point where I wonder if they're actually there. I think the coriander comes through the most in the flavour whereas salt is only affecting the mouthfeel. In terms of balance I quite like it but I think the malt and apricot (special ingredient) could be more subtle while the salt and coriander could be amped up. This is definitely worth a try.
