Appearance: Poured with a body as black as night with two fingers of head, that stayed around a while but sadly did not lace.
Smell: Charred toffee malt and maybe a bit of burnt grass. Took some warming to come out but decent.
Taste: Toffee malt to start that gets progressively more charred as the beer goes on before a bitter grass note wraps things up. Straightforward and well done, but very simple.
Mouthfeel: Nice mixed aftertaste that does a good job of not letting the charred bitter note get out of control. Carbonation helps out the entire beer, and while the beer itself if fairly one noted, it does a good job of being a nice slide down the hill in terms of going from sweet to the bitter end.
Drinkability: Medium bodied, easy to drink, settles down well and really does a good job of being just a simple session quaffer. That said, you do not detect even a hint of that 6% so if you treated it like session ale, you'd be in for a shock.
Final Thoughts: This is well put together English Mild and it's appeal is it's simplicity. It's very much for someone who wants malt with a bit of char to it. If that's what you are looking for, this is the beer for you. If you are looking for your beer to be a boquet, this isn't going to do it for you. I found it enjoyable I would recommend it.
