Appearance: Poured with a single finger of head that produced some lace but did not stick around. The body is a somewhat cloudy brassy yellow that shows steady carbonation.
Smell: Spruce resin I find to be the dominant note, backed by grapefuit hops and biscuit malt. It did not require any warming to achieve a great potency. As it warms the grapefruit swaps places with the resin. Maybe the barest hint of peach in the background as well after warming up.
Taste: Biscuit malt with a touch of grapefruit that adds a subdued orange and raspberry touch that then turns to a fairly strong dose of resin like hops that overcome the citrus a bit too aggressively, but seem to do a decent job of cleaning things up. This one just slightly oversteps the fine line of too much hopping for me, but not by much, so I do enjoy it.
Mouthfeel: The carbonation is well done and helps out the entire beer, what I don't like is that resin hop end offers an odd clingy dry sensation just after you drink it, for like 20 seconds before it seems to back off. It kind of forces you to slow down, otherwise it gets too bitter and out of control. Good transitioning and a mild mixed aftertaste after the 20 seconds passes.
Drinkability: On the lighter side of medium body that settles down quite well. That dry note though is really pooping the party turning into what could have been something really good into more of a take it easy kind of sipper.
Final Thoughts: This was a very nicely done pale ale, and it honestly feels like if one type of hops was backed off just a little, this would be something great. I get the impression that others that are more bitter and hop minded would thoroughly enjoy this offering. I'd certainly say this is Vimy's best offering that I've had.
