473 mL can, Day 12 of Nita Beer's 2024 Advent Calendar; dated Nov 12 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy pale golden colour, topped with one inch of loose, foamy white head that melts away within three minutes or so. A narrow ring of lace clings to the glass, with a frothy collar and thin, filmy cap remaining on the surface. Understated aroma of grapefruit, orange & lemon peels, with suggestions of grainy malts and cranberry.
A very mellow West coast pale. Grapefruit figures in strongly, with orange, lemon, berries and piney hops also discernible; hints of bready pale malts serve as scaffolding. Lemon peel, resiny hops and pine needles on the back end, with a citrusy aftertaste that quickly fades to dry; restrained bitterness, at least for a WCIPA. Medium-light in body, with lively carbonation that adds a crisp bite to this brew's smooth mouthfeel. Good drinkability - I could enjoy a few of these in a row.
Final Grade: 3.73, a B grade. Vimy's West Coast IPA is nothing to write home about, but it's good enough to get the job done. Very clean and surprisingly well-balanced, sacrificing bitterness and perhaps some personality in favour of a more approachable, citrusy profile. Arguably the best Vimy product I've had to date, though I also enjoyed their pale ale - I'd encourage other hopheads to give this a try if they spot it on the shelf.
