a well made esb, not enough of these in the game, and i thought the more traditional styles were all better in here than the more ambitious or trend following stuff, whatever that says about them, but a good esb is a good esb, and thats what we have here. a lighter shade for the style, pale copper with a full inch of white creamy head on it, nice retention too, pretty good clarity, and lots of bubbles visible. i like the aroma a lot, nutty kilned malts with a little sweetness and a honey note, along with a baked bread and toasted almond element, a touch sweet when i taste it, but the grain sugar is balanced well by a classic english hop leafy bitterness at the end as well as rounded out by a flavorful doughy old worldy english ale yeast, fermented in its ideal habitat is seems like. maris otter, a lighter crystal, and a little more hops than i expected. medium bodied, clean in the finish, nice and carbonated, and overall a pretty solid example of a style i wish we saw more of from american craft brewers.
