Bado Brewing "Zed's Lost In The Woods - Blackberry Ginger"
on tap at the brewery on 17 February 2018
Notes: Clear deep copper/light chestnut brown with a bit of a reddish sheen beneath a creamy head of yellowed off-white. Good head retention and lacing. The aroma is fruity, but not necessarily from blackberry although there is some there, caramelish, and subtly spicy but again, not necessarily from the ginger. The flavor starts off as a caramelish ale in the English style, medium and even a bit darker, and lightly sweet. It then delivers some of the blackberry across the middle, cutting through some of the caramel, followed by another splash in the finish. It's a little bit apple-like, and even pear-like as well. The ginger doesn't appear until the finish, and even there it's mild. It just gives it a little zing and along with a moderate bitterness, helps it to finish dry. Some mild leafy and earthy hops linger as well. It's very nicely balanced between malt and fruit and spice, and not nearly as fruity as some fruit-infused beers these days, or even "juicy" IPAs. Instead the fruit is just an additional component to an already well-rounded English-style ale. Quite pleasant and easy to drink.
