Bottle from de Bierkoning @ home. Pours a black color and a light brown head with a thin layer retention. Aroma's: drop/licorice, sweet, umami, roast. Retronasal there's roasted malts, drop, molasses, light booze, light barrel. Flavor is moderate sweet, a bit salty/umami, roasted malts, light bitter. Medium bodied. Low carbonation. Long finish, light ashy, moderate bitter. I know these guys love their mixed fermentation things, but they do an excellent job here too.

Got this one from the Duvel guy in Utrecht. Cheers!

Best Before February 2021
Hops: Zeus, Warrior, UK Goldings
Yeast: US-05
Note: Drunk right after the base beer BB4 January 2021, which was a metallic drain pout.

APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields 1+ finger, medium-thicker looking, tight, creamy tan head with great retention. Black body with touches of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full, thick cap and leaves sheets of lacing on the glass. Splotchy wisp remains leaving touches of lacing down the glass as it empties. Okay body but the head is really tight.

SMELL: Definitely some boozy spices up front, with hints of vanilla and wood as well. The base beer shows some leather, dried fruits and tobacco under the spicy Glen Moray barrel.

TASTE: Some spicy alcohol, wood, notes of vanilla cream and whisky at the swallow. Bold, boozy and spicy begin. Some roasted flavors at the swallow, moving into a bold and lingering finish of roasted malts, leather, bitter coffee flavors, sweet vanilla notes, tobacco for sure, as well as some boozy whisky barrel, wood and spicy alcohol. Bold, flavorful and plenty going on.

PALATE: Fuller body with lower levels of carbonation. Silky smooth on the palate, enough weight, goes down smooth with a bit of a burn and finishes rather sticky. Decent heat lingers.

OVERALL: This is really good stuff. Definitely a step up on the base beer, which was already solid. The barrel aging adds a level of spicy alcohol and whisky character on top of an already strong base beer, so the former doesn’t overpower the latter. Really good and well worth checking out, especially if you like boozier, spirit heavy aged stouts.
