Quietly sneaking back on the IPA scene, the classic Imperial IPA is making a comeback. Brewed in the balanced Midwest substyle, there's a silent but formidable voice that speaks out against the smooth, the creamy, the haze. And Copper State is listening.
Silent Canary pours a deep amber hue and submersed in a foggy haze. As its creamy off-white scent builds, so do a caramelized scent of tropical fruit, citrus, herb and pine. As those caramel malts creep onto the tongue, a bold sense of candied nuttiness, light toast, bread crust and caramel make first impressions.
A shift in taste occurs on the middle palate when the malt sweetness begins to fade and the hop flavors build upon. Red grapefruit, lime and orange add a burst of citrus while the tropical fruit impressions follow with pineapple, mango and papaya. With hints of peach and apricot rounding out the later taste, the beer develops a peppery, resinous and gripping bitterness that shares a pine, grassy and herbal bite.
Medium full in body, the robust IPA has a plump creaminess early but trails into a sticky and resinous dryness late to ensure a good sense of drinkability, refreshment and palatability. A long afterglow of hemp, spruce and peppery grasses trail into an extended finish of hops. This beer is simply screaming for attention.
