Pitch black body, clear, with a sizzling milk chocolate head that slips in and out of existence quickly, leaving no trace.
Aromas of rich dark chocolate, port, deep full red wine. Dark cherry, black forest cake. Touch of vanilla. Hints at an enticing dessert, rich and flavourful, but not too sweet.
Deep, dark chocolate on the palate, accompanied by a prominent fruitiness - raspberry juice, cherries, blackberries. Once again a bold red wine comes to mind, given the medium body (it's not a thick and satiny stout), light & fine carbonation, and mild acidity & tannins. Off-dry finish, which lingers with chocolate and berries. Avoids roast bitterness, and just lightly sweet, not sugary or syrupy. Wouldn't mind more carbonation, it's just enough that it gets away without being flat.
Give this to your wine-loving friend for a try, you might convert them. They've done a great job with unexpected flavours and approachability. I'm often turned off by overly sweet & thick Imperial Stouts, so this was a pleasant surprise, though a more body and carbonation are need to make it excellent.
Went back to check the description, and they used Chardonnay barrels for 28 months - so there it is!
