Shizumu 沈む (meaning: drowning) to look across the industry in this day and age, you’d be hard pressed to find this style amongst the rank and file brewery releases. Its path to prominence started on the Californian coast before completely upending an industry on the cusp of unmitigated growth. Read: it’s the beer many breweries made their bonafides with, before pivoting to the next trend. Today, amongst an ever-rising sea of uniformly hazy, juicy (and we admit delicious) IPAs, we see an opportunity to scratch an old itch.
Shizumu pours crystalline clear and is brimming with American hop character (Chinook, Cascade, and Centennial hops) by way of orange pith, ripe passion fruit and pleasant pine. Expect a clean hop bitterness and balanced malt backbone to cull these complementary flavours into an organized delight.

Tried an April batch in a Teku. This one pours copper gold with excellent collar. Semi transparent pour here. Nose is strong of malted caramel. Feel is malty forward hops with bitter finish. West coasts are not my favourite but this is a decent enough entry.

Can: Poured a clear amber color ale with a large off-white head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt notes with some resinous and citrusy dry hops notes. Taste is also dominated by lightly caramelized malt notes with some dry resinous and citrusy hops notes with a dry finish. Body is about average with good level of carbonation. Enjoyable but caramelized malt presence is bit more noticeable then I would have wished.
