Pouring an inviting light amber colour with thick, dense foam, Kakkō (meaning: “downhill”) is our classic take on a Viennese lager. Anton Dreher, the heir of a popular brewery in…. you guessed it, Vienna… popularized this style and arguably revolutionized brewing when he paired his patented lightly kilned malts (now referred to as Vienna Malt) with lager fermentation. Ours features notes of toasted bread crust, chestnut honey, and a hint of wildflower, which complement its smooth texture and clean finish. As with all of our lagers, decoction, extended cold conditioning time, and natural carbonation all serve to soften the edges of this simple yet refined creation.

From a 355ml can poured into a pilsner glass. A one finger fine, off white head on a slightly hazy dark amber. the head diminished to a layer. Sheets of fine lacing.
Caramel malts in the nose. Tastes of bread and toast. Some fruit. A dry, very mildly bitter finish.
A medium light body with moderate carbonation. Overall a fine Vienna Lager. Well worth a try.

Body colour sits between copper and gold, clear, with a full, thick, sandy head, good retention.
The nose presents distinct hop spice coupled with caramel malt.
Taste is to the point, balancing prominent sweet malt - caramel and coke - with pine resin hop notes; the finish is dry, but the sugars linger, the sourdough bread malt flavours being retained; the feel is sticky and sharp, with medium body and carbonation.
On point as far as the style goes, with crisp, clean, clear malt and hop contributions. The style tends to have a touch too much residual sugar for my taste, but this is solid in the right place - on a ski hill.
