Appearance: Poured nearly flat and thus did not lace or retain at all. The body is a dark opaque brown with little bits of yeast floating in it.
Smell: I get a leathery wine kind of smell from it, but it needed a lot of warming to come out, as it takes quite some time to achieve good potency.
Taste: Toffee malt with a hint of leather and molasses that rapidly shifts to a more plum, raisin and nut taste before a very dry earth hops and another hint of wood and alcohol rounds things out.
Mouthfeel: The carbonation just isn't there, which I think actually helps this as the taste is quite potent and teeters on going overboard as it is. The transitioning isn't great, as it's a sharp change up and a quick trip down. The leather and malt aftertaste that doesn't get out of control due to the higher alcohol note is what saves this category.
Drinkabiliy: Medium bodied and a bit too dry for my liking, but the low carbonation means it settles down well and it does a good job of using the alcohol note to it's advantage as opposed to concealing it.
Final Thoughts: I think the rarity of leather notes in beer might be skewing my review a bit here. It's rare I find a beer whose flavor profile I like, but seems to not perform in other areas. This is certainly a seasonal one time affair, as it was a unique experience but not something I'd like to drink every day. If you like trying new and unexpected thing, this beer is probably your cup of tea.
