Sailfish’s Golden Lager struck me as very Bud-like in a number of ways. Of course it’s been years since I’ve had a Bud, so I’m working from memory here. But the familiar pale yellowness, the musty haybale aroma, and even the 4.6% ABV all remind me of the scourge from St. Louis. That doesn’t make this a bad beer. It’s actually very refreshing. It just emulates a style that one often associates with pale lagers from out of town.

The Golden Lager showed elegant lace and decent, though not polished clarity. It delivered a light grainy taste with an oddly pleasing tinge of ginger. The Sailfish menu lists it at an absurdly high 51 IBU, but a tender poke of malt sweetness makes this seem unlikely. Bottom line: very drinkable. Don’t be put off by the familiar shortcomings of the ubiquitous American lager style.
