light for the style but very well made brew, pretty darn traditional as they go, not a whole lot of deviation from the expectation here, but its hard to be critical of quality beer, and thats what this is. light to medium amber in color, clear for what it is, and staying lighter than brown for sure, a short sandstone head on top. the nose is nice, subtle banana and raisin, port wine, and the german ale yeast, quite familiar there. the flavor is the same, with a light dried cherry character, a cool fruitiness and faint cocoa too, but the wheat element here is very light for me, toasted and simple, not as full bodied and flavorful as it sometimes can be, so the yeast stands out a little bit. i think as light as it is, it makes sense in a california context, big strong heavy dark beers are not what i imagine most folks crave with the nice weather and beaches nearby, so lightening up a classic like this seems like a good idea. clean in the finish, well made, and well carbonated. overall a tasty brew, but it was one of the least memorable from our visit to this awesome little brewery...

With a dark opaque brown color, it is a refreshing, smooth beer with flavors of caramel, biscuit, some toffee and just enough of the little lemon to make it balanced. The subtle carbonation makes the overall beer enjoyable. Although the aroma has the tendency to disappear because of the smoothness, the flavor still lingers nicely in the palate with a light, dark bready aftertaste. Other great Dunkelweizens to try out is the Dark Cloud from Mother Earth Brewing in North Carolina [Not to be confused with the one in Vista!] as well as the Dunkelweizen from Trader Joe's.
