473 mL can, Day 15 of Nita Beer's 2024 Advent Calendar; no canning date and served slightly chilled.

Pours bright golden yellow with brilliant clarity; situated atop is two fingers of frothy, foamy white head that sizzles away over the next two minutes or so. A thin collar and patchy, filmy cap live on, with good lace deposition after a sip or two - looks fine so far. Grainy on the nose, with added hints of freshly baked bread and a touch of honey sweetness.

It tastes alright - inoffensive, but not as clean or crisp as the imported German competition. Grainy malts, bread and digestive biscuit at the forefront, with a light honey sweetness discernible in the background. Hints of earthy, herbal, dirty hop bitterness come through on the back end, presenting a touch of bitterness prior to a malty finish; the aftertaste is malty and a little earthy. Light in body, with assertive carbonation that stays prickly throughout the session; feels smooth and a little frothy on the palate. Easy enough to drink, but this style is meant for mass consumption, and this festbier just doesn't maintain my interest for long.

Final Grade: 3.54, an acceptable B grade. Riverhead's Festbier is a decent German lager and a fair interpretation of this easy-drinking style, though it does seem a little rough around the edges. Basically just an adequate, unspectacular beer - I don't think it's a lager I'd specifically look for, as the Euro imports in this category are all superior. That's not necessarily a knock on Riverhead, either: few Ontario breweries do it as well as the Germans themselves, and you can't really compete with them on price point. It's forgettable, but I wouldn't discourage others from trying it.
