Appearance: Poured without even a slight amount of head, so needless to say no retention, no lacing and no signs of carbonation The body is a very dark brown.
Smell: Nice, power toffee malt with hints of almond and a touch of earthy hops. Warming helps bring out the potency
to a great level, as it is a bit mild while it's still cool.
Taste: Restrained toffee malt to start that turns to a slight nutty note and then hits a a smoky and earthy bitter end. For a session ale this is quite good, but it does come across as a bit too basic. The problem I think I'm finding is the lack of carbonation is throwing the flavour off.
Mouthfeel: The beer was half flat upon delivery and was completely flat by the half way mark. Coupled with the lack of head, this was a huge problem for this one. It's a shame, since the transitioning seems to flow nicely and it offers a very nice mixed aftertaste, although it does leave a bit of a dry note.
Drinkability: On the lighter side of medium bodied, with just the right amount of thickness for a session ale. That dry note does hamper it a bit, but it's made up for with how well it settles. That said, the complete lack of carbonation is why it settles down so well, so I don't think I should be praising it.
Final Thoughts: I may hold some blame for this one, as this bottle did sit in my fridge for a while, but given it still had some carbonation and the fairly loud noise it made when I popped it open, I'm not quite ready to believe this was the result of a bad cap. I'd like to have this one again, perhaps a bit fresher as it hit most of the right buttons for me, save that it was far too flat.
