this was called so-val on their beer menu when i was in last night and maybe more a scotch than a scottish, if we are being particular, neat to see a smoked beer at a bbq place, always a good combination in my eyes! this was the better of the two beers i had in here, next to the mexican lager, and is quite drinkable for the style, which is usually stronger and sweeter than this, the smoked element adds a lot, and this is really balanced and flavorful, even if just a little less refined than the best version of itself would be. i believe they also make this with brown sugar, but its fermented out for the most part, i get the flavor, but i didnt find much residual sugar here. the beer is light brown, with light haze and a short white head, could be cleaned up a little, but it smells and tastes nice, a cherrywood smoke profile, a little hint of peat too, and a toasted woody note too, rather complex in the nose, a little more mellow in the flavor. wet earth, dark bread, molasses, and light toffee in the flavor, a hint of raisin and black pepper and char too, nothing bitter or too intense about the smoke, its warming and even cozy to me, not aggressive like it can sometimes be. a nice pairing with their exceptional tacos in here, the food was incredible here! solid smoked scotch type ale, not too heavy, good food beer in a place like this.
