A strong, but smooth lager aged in Axe & Oak Rye Whiskey barrels to impart the subtle and unique complexities that only charred American white oak provide.

Excellent head production and great retention; no lacing.

Aroma is quite potent, but dominated by oak and rye whiskey. Moderate sourness from the mash, along with notes of red grape, toast, light to moderate char, prune, raisin, and nuts. The aroma is really growing on me over time.

Very smooth on the palate. It's not exactly thick, and it's not overly hot, drinking a bit lighter than its double digit ABV - somewhere more in the 8-9% range by feel. While I prefer more thickness in such a bold beer, at the same time, the overall result is exceptional drinkability, and I can't complain about that. Long, lingering heat from the barrel influence.

Rye whiskey doesn't stand out quite as strong on the palate, and it's not quite as sour and darkly fruity as the nose. All of those same components are there, however, even if in different levels of strength and balance. Really tasty overall, with a lovely roasty bitterness fully appropriate to the style. It doesn't stand out as a genre favorite for me, but it's very enjoyable.

No change in the look or smell. A slight bump in the taste; it's slightly richer, fuller; not as bitter or phenolic. No change in the mouthfeel.

Yes, a decent enough barrel-aged Baltic porter, but nothing exceptional.

Poured at 61.3 °F.

---------------------

A nice, dark brown body; frothy and creamy, light khaki hued head. An enticingly mild charred grain aroma; very mild sweetness on the nose. Light cocoa notes; grain char; boozy and phenolic; heavy bitterness. Heavy body; smooth and slick; some decent residual sugars yet has an overall hot dryness to it.

The beer brings some dark lager smoothness to the party yet also has some mildly harsh qualities. It's actually fairly enjoyable but not exceptional.

Poured out at 55 °F; no bottle dating info available.
