We think we've built a pretty classic pub at Eastbound and now we've brewed the classic pub ale in Houndstooth Irish Red Ale. Pouring a bright coppery red with a thick white head on it this malty ale is perfect for any pub session. Roasted malts bring notes of caramel and toasted rye with a little touch of fruit from the Irish Ale yeast. Perfect for any season and best shared with friends in the pub or at home.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Oct 7 2025 and served barely chilled.

Pours a clear copper-amber colour, generating two fingers of lumpy, creamy, off white-tinged head that lingers for more than five minutes. Not long after that, I'm left with a tight collar and a patchy film on the surface, as well as a lovely ring of even lace clinging to the glass; looks great so far. Quite malty on the nose, with rye malts providing hints of pumpernickel bread and spiciness; other things that come to mind include caramel, toasted bread, bran muffins and earthy, herbal hops.

This is an Irish red with personality. Malty and a little sweet at the forefront, with flavours of toffee, toasted grains & bread, as well as a spicy rye note that I am really digging. Toffee, toasted grains and herbal, earthy hops round out the back end, with some light rye spiciness echoing into the aftertaste. Medium-light in body, with middling carbonation that livens up this brew's otherwise smooth mouthfeel. I don't typically session Irish red ales - ok, maybe on St. Patrick's Day - but this one has that potential.

Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. Eastbound's Houndstooth is a solid red ale. I must reiterate that it's the rye that's responsible for adding so much extra character to this Irish red - a style that can sometimes come across as quite mundane, at least if no risks are taken. The rye is a risk that paid off, though I'll admit I'm biased, because I have always loved rye beers. I also appreciate the fact that this isn't unnecessarily sweet - it's actually pretty well balanced for an Irish red. I encourage other BAs to try this for themselves, especially if you happen to be a fan of rye beers, or malty amber ales.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From the Huron Church Rd. LCBO in nearby Windsor. Canned October 7/25. My second beer from the Toronto, Ontario brewery, and first for 2025. Enthusiastically recommended by Gracie the cat...
